Everyone thought the US would have the best 2026 World Cup experience… they were wrong. 🤯 USA vs Mexico vs Canada: Which host is actually the most fan-friendly?
By Rahul Das (Spl Soccer Columnist)
The 2026 World Cup is the first hosted by 3 nations. All 16 cities will have FIFA Fan Festivals, but the fan experience varies a lot by country. Here’s how they compare:
1. Mexico – The Passion + Affordability ChampionBest for: Atmosphere, cost, pure football culture Why fans love it: Most passionate atmosphere: Football is “heralded with almost religious reverence” in Mexico. Over 73% of the population consider themselves fans. Expect “vivid displays of international colors, ongoing chants, continuous drumming, and passionate emotion”. Best Fan Festivals: FIFA in Mexico is “a non-stop celebration, with the liveliest FIFA Fan Festivals of all host countries”. Cheapest host by far: “Hands-down, Mexico is the most affordable destination”. Airbnb: Guadalajara $89/night, Mexico City $132, Monterrey $135 – the 3 cheapest of all 16 host cities. Tickets, food, transit: Game tickets, concessions, parking, local transport all cheapest. Easiest entry: If you have a valid US, Canada, UK, Japan, or Schengen visa, you enter Mexico visa-free for 180 days. FMM tourist card is ∼$54 and often included in airfare. Stadium vibe: Estadio Azteca upgraded to 88,000 seats. “Volcano-shaped venue… steep, bowl-shaped design that builds crowd noise to an overwhelming crescendo”. Host cities: Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey. Deepest football history of any host nation. Trade-offs: Infrastructure older than US/Canada. Border processing times expected to double. Some political tension – Ecuador-Mexico match had hotel noise complaints, but fans called Mexicans “very kind, very friendly and very courteous”.
2. USA – The “Surprise Hospitality” WinnerBest for: Scale, amenities, unexpected friendliness Why fans love it :Shocking hospitality: Foreign fans are “shocked by the hospitality here”. Scottish fan: “American hospitality is the greatest in the world”. Norwegians + Scots praised NYC despite “rude” reputation.5 friendliest cities voted by tourists: New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Seattle, Atlanta . Boston: Tartan Army “took over Beantown… Boston embraced the Scots as much as the quilt clad crew did of the city”. Now sister cities with Glasgow. Lawrence, Kansas: Adopted Algeria. High school band learned anthem. Local: “Welcome to the United States, welcome to Kansas!” 10M+ views. Chattanooga, TN: Turned city into “la Roja” for Spain. Players posted “Gracias, Chattanooga!”. Organic celebrations: Beyond FIFA’s “pay to play” Fan Fests, fans hijacked cities. “Spontaneous, Genuine and Joyful Celebrations” in Boston, NY, Miami, KC, Houston, Seattle. Infrastructure: 11 host cities, 78 of 104 matches. Marriott Bonvoy has “dozens of properties in each host city”. Diversity: “Most diverse World Cup in history” mirrors America. Latino watch parties in Utah packed venues even though it’s not a host. Fan experience rankings: Best: Gillette Stadium Foxboro 8.08/10 – cheapest beers $8.58, low mosquitoes. Worst: SoFi Los Angeles 5.82/10 – $14 beer, $7 water, $383 hotels, highest mosquito risk. Trade-offs: Most expensive. “Travel accommodations… at premium rates… especially NY/NJ, SF, Seattle, Miami, Atlanta”. Kansas City Airbnb avg $565/night – 6x Guadalajara. Complex ESTA/visa process.
3. Canada – The Diverse, Organized UnderdogBest for: Multiculturalism, safety, transit Why fans love it: Diversity + transit: Toronto “one of the most diverse cities in the world… straightforward transit network”. BMO Field accessible by streetcar from Union Station. Cheaper than US: Toronto Airbnb $154.51, Vancouver rates from $261. Both in 5 cheapest host cities. Easy entry: eTA is CAD $7, 5-year validity .Fan zones work: “Official fan zones are free and open to the public in… Toronto”. Base camp vibe: Toronto “natural multi-day base for fans attending matches in both Canadian host cities”. Host cities: Toronto, Vancouver. Only 6 + 4 matches each. Trade-offs: Fewer matches. Hotel pressure high vs room inventory. Weather cooler. Less “soccer culture” than Mexico. Head-to-Head Comparison Category Mexico USA Canada Atmosphere10/10 – “Religious reverence”8/10 – “Arms-wide-open welcome”7/10 – Diverse but newer soccer cultureCostCheapest – $89-$135/night Airbnb Most expensive – $565/night KCMid – $154-$261Fan Festivals“ Most lively… of all host countries”13 official + many host-ledFree, public zonesEntry EaseEasiest – Visa-free with US/Canada/UK visaESTA $40, complexeTA CAD $7, easyLocal Welcome“Very kind, friendly and courteous”“American hospitality is greatest in world”“Straightforward transit… diverse” Infrastructure Older, but Azteca upgradedBest – 11 cities, 78 matchesModern, compactBeer PriceCheapest$8.58 Boston to $14 LAMid- Verdict: Who Should You Pick? For pure football passion + budget: Mexico wins. You’ll get the loudest stadiums, cheapest trip, and “non-stop celebration”. If you can only afford one country, go here. For amenities + surprise friendliness: USA wins. Despite pre-tournament fears of “anti-American sentiment”, fans say the welcome “made this World Cup so enchanting”. Pick Boston, Philly, Seattle, Atlanta, KC for friendliest. Avoid LA for cost/bugs. For safety + multicultural ease: Canada wins. Toronto + Vancouver are diverse, transit-friendly, with cheap eTA entry. Great if you’re nervous about US border issues. Best overall strategy: Multi-country trip. Mexico for atmosphere + cost, USA for Final/scale, Canada for transit ease. Use a North America eSIM to avoid roaming. Border processing will double, so leave 4-hour cushions. Reality check: “Far from grim experience we feared, World Cup brought out best in us”. Americans “threw ourselves into our role as the world’s host with gusto”. But “FIFA missed a real opportunity by pricing out so many fans”.
