New Stars from Round 1 – World Cup 2026 :here are the new stars who announced themselves in the first round.
1. Malik Tillman – USA, 24 Club: Bayer Leverkusen | Position: Attacking MidfielderRound 1 impact: The “unsung hero” of USMNT’s 4-1 win over Paraguay. Had a brilliant assist, ran the game, and was “all over the field showing off flashy back-heel passes”. 4. Yan Diomande – Ivory Coast, 19 Club: RB Leipzig | Position: Right midfielderRound 1 impact: Ivory Coast’s top performer vs Ecuador. Had 12 touches in opposition box, 5 chances created – most by any player in the match. Also 5 recoveries, 2 interceptions, won 11 ground duels. Why he’s a star: Complete winger. “Explosive… pace, direct dribbling and end product”. CBS lists him as #7 breakout wonderkid to shock 2026. Story: Only 19 but already “one of the Bundesliga’s most feared young attackers”. Ivory Coast built their opener around him.
5. Ayyoub Bouaddi – Morocco, 18 Club: Lille | Position: Central midfielderRound 1 impact: Morocco’s 1-1 draw vs Brazil “being called a boring game”, but Bouaddi was everywhere. Only the 2 Brazilian CBs had more passes. 90.7% passing accuracy. Why he’s a star: Became only the 2nd youngest player to complete 50+ passes in a World Cup match since 1966. 6. Vozinha – Cape Verde, 40 Club: Free agent | Position: GKRound 1 impact: Kept a clean sheet vs Spain in 0-0 draw. Made 7 saves, MOTM. Cape Verde’s first World Cup point ever. Why he’s a star: The human story. Went from <100k Instagram followers to over 10 million in days. “One of the feel-good stories of the tournament”. At 40, became “global sensation”. Story: Revealed his mother couldn’t attend due to visa/financial issues. Blue Sharks made history and Vozinha became the face of it.
7. Nestory Irankunda – Australia, 20 Club: Bayern Munich | Position: WingerRound 1 impact: Became Australia’s youngest World Cup scorer at 20y 125d. “Explosive, direct, athletic… brilliant goal vs Turkey”. fifa.comWhy he’s a star: FIFA listed him in “Early contenders | FIFA Young Player Award”.
